Joint Assessment Mission to Review Alcohol Control Policy and Strategy in Thailand


Dr. Orratai Waleewong and Dr. Surasak Chaiyasong from Health Promotion Policy Research Center (HPR), International Health Policy Program (IHPP), were invited to attend the Joint Assessment Mission to Review Alcohol Policy and Strategy in Thailand on 20th -24th  January 2020 as a member of the Technical Coordinating Committee and the national expert team.

The Joint Assessment Mission to Review Alcohol Policy and Strategy in Thailand Participants was conducted with collaboration between the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Public Health and supported by WHO Country Cooperation Strategy on Non-communicable diseases (CCS-NCD).

The Mission drawn from domestic and global health professionals with expertise in alcohol control came together at the request of the government of Thailand to accomplish the following objectives: (1) to assess progress in implementing of the Thailand National Alcohol Strategy 2011-2020, with a focus on WHO SAFER initiative; (2) to identify strengths, opportunities, limitations and threats with the aim of strengthening the national alcohol control system and guiding the development of the new national alcohol control policy/strategy; and (3) to develop evidence-based recommendations to strengthen the national response to the alcohol burden with specific inputs for the new national alcohol control policy.

The Mission reviewed relevant documents and legislation, interviewed and received briefings from key stakeholders both within and outside of government, examined alcohol control activities at both national and provincial levels; and presented the findings and policy recommendations to key policy stakeholders at the Government House.
